BPP Alumnus Tahir Ashraf in Muslim 100 Power List
BPP is delighted that BPP Alumnus Tahir Ashraf is listed in the Muslim 100 Power List Parliamentary Review – Trail Blazers which was launched on 7th May 2018 in London’s Hilton Park Lane. The Muslim 100 Power List honours only the very highest levels of achievement and outstanding contribution made by Muslim men and women from the international Muslim community.
The BPP LLM and Bar graduate is the first Muslim to have established a commercial barristers’ chambers in the heart of Legal London – 5 Chancery Lane Commercial Barristers Chambers. Tahir, who cross-qualified and worked as a solicitor, is also a business and insolvency specialist.
Born in Lancashire as son of a Muslim immigrant factory foreman, Tahir was introduced to law during journalism training at the BBC in the 1990s. Voluntary interpreting eventually became the springboard for a legal career.
Before Tahir attained his LLB Law (Hons) degree he was encouraged by a law lecturer to pursue a career as a barrister. He therefore spent time observing independently and discussing court proceedings with High Court judges. After finishing his undergraduate degree in 2005, he joined the Honourable Society of Lincoln’s Inn. There Tahir was mentored by a commercial Queen’s Counsel and two Chancery Commercial High Court Judges, and he became a qualified advocate when he successfully completed his Bar Exams at BPP in 2008. Lincoln’s Inn then called him to the Bar of England & Wales as Barrister.
BPP Alumnus Tahir Ashraf has a successful track record of winning awards: Besides being selected as UK Commercial Barrister of the Year 2016 of the ACQ5 Global Awards, he was also the Commerce and Business Barrister of the Year 2016 of the Finance Monthly Global Awards. The latter celebrates the success of financial organisations, industry advisors and legal professionals worldwide who have performed at the highest possible level.
Tahir is also the first British Muslim man of Pakistani descent to be on the Editorial Board of the Journal of International Banking and Financial Law (a peer-reviewed LexisNexis Butterworths publication). He is also registered as a barrister in Pakistan.
